Phil is doing a sponsored bike ride in September. There is a group of them cycling from Westminster Abbey to Harby in Nottinghamshire - a total of 220 miles over 4 days. Why? To raise money to replace Harby Church Roof.
Why Westminster to Harby - The Eleanor crosses are twelve lavishly decorated stone monuments, of which three survive intact, found in a line down part of the east of England. King Edward I had the crosses erected between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile, marking the route of her body as it was taken to London. Queen Eleanor, wife of King Edward I, died during the evening of November 28th 1290 at the Manor House of Richard de Weston in Harby. Her body was taken to Lincoln where it was embalmed before her funeral cortège travelled the 160 miles south to Westminster Abbey. A grief-stricken King Edward I marked each of the twelve places the cortège stopped overnight during the journey with an Eleanor Cross. Most of the crosses were destroyed during the Civil War but three remain, at Geddington, Hardingstone and Waltham.
The route will visit all 12 sites of the original Eleanor Crosses, covering an estimated 220 miles in just over four days.
Wednesday 19th September - evening ride covering Westminster Abby, Charing Cross, Cheapside and Waltham Cross - 18 miles
Thursday 20th September - St Albans, Dunstalbe and Woburn - 60 miles
Friday 21st September - Stony Stratford, Northamtpon, Geddington - 60 miles
Saturday 22nd September - Stamford and Grantham - 52 miles
Sunday 23rd September - Lincoln to Harby - 30 miles
